The History of Subaru

Starting as Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. in 1915, the company first served as an aircraft research laboratory where it provided technology for aircraft manufacturing. However, it wasn’t long before Kenji Kita, the CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries during this time showed interest in building cars, and thus, the first Subaru car was born. The Subaru 1500 was released in 1954, which provided comfort and stability for riders who wished to drive both short and long distances.

Soon, more and more Subaru models were released, including the Subaru 360 in March 1958, the Subaru Sambar and the Sambar Light Van in 1961, and the Subaru 1000 in May 1966. That same year, the Subaru Building was also established in Shinjuku, serving as the company’s main headquarters. What followed was a new era in-car technology in Japan, where many companies pushed the boundaries of what a small sedan can do.

By 1969, Subaru released the R-2 to replace Subaru 360, with the Subaru Leone following it in 1971, which gained international recognition for its innovative design. Since then, Subaru has been highly acclaimed, with so many of its models running on our streets today.
